Fear or intense emotions can set in motion heart-pounding, queasi- ness, sweating, tightness of muscles, or shortness of breath. This rise in disturbing body sensations can trigger disturbing emotions and trauma imagery that is stored by our child within, scenes from past situations where we felt helpless or scared can race through our minds as flashbacks or even nightmares. This becomes a vicious circle in which the body and mind play off of each other, causing a negative synergy in which the disturbing emotions and imagery trigger disturbing body sensations and vice versa. This can drop trauma survivors into a confusing “black hole” that they can have trouble finding their way out of and can contribute to feeling scared, helpless and disempowered all over again.
The Ten Stages is a studied recovery course. It is a source of reconnection a method of unlearning and a reintroduction to our child within which leads us back to our one true intuitive voice. We start to learn and come out of our protective dysfunctional shell and reclaim our lives.
