Show confidence and faith in our child within s new abilities by noticing small improvements and pointing out our developing skills to ourselves. Be realistic. Don't demand perfection. Understand that our child within needs a great deal of re-training to play with other children, share toys, take turns, show kindness. Always praise our progress, even if the child within becomes dissociated we use the building blocks of our new found awareness. Praise work and effort even after perceived failure. Always try to give hope, but emphasise that many things come only with persistent awareness.
Avoid constantly using parental words like no, don't, stop, quit, and can't. And don't overgeneralise by using words like always, anything, nobody, everyone, and never. Using these negative words builds poor self-esteem by emphasising that something is wrong with ourselves and our child within. The Child Within who hear these words too much tend to ignore them and return to the cellar.
Be patient. Scolding, yelling, and hostility show a lack of faith, make training our child within unpleasant, and may provoke rebellion. Show faith by making our reminders, requests, and commands politely, using the word please. State our reminders, requests, and commands positively rather than negatively. Talk about what you want, rather than what you don't like or won't tolerate. "There's no reason to become upset. Do you remember what patience and awareness is?"
