When we trump a person’s right to make autonomous decisions we send them the message that they are incompetent. By giving them a label We teach them not to trust themselves. We teach them that their experience is a pathology rather than an opportunity for self-study and growth. We teach them that their “symptoms” or “defences” are a problem rather than a window into a world of deeper meaning and history. We teach them that life’s answers are outside of them, that the truth is not within, and that our best bet is not to look within for guidance.
